Things to know before getting your first piercing | Roxxi's Poolroom

Yamaa! It’s Em!

I’m back again for a lil yarn about first time piercing - what to expect and what to prepare for. There are some things that we need to prepare for before getting anything done to our bodies.

Before coming to see me at Roxxi's Poolroom to get a piercing, have something to eat and drink! This is an important part of when you get any sort of body modification or tattoo. It sounds a bit basic but it’s incredibly important to have some energy in our bodies to burn throughout the procedure as naturally our adrenaline is high and our blood pressure drops when piercing skin. To avoid the chances of fainting or feeling a bit icky after being pierced, eating beforehand will help minimise this from happening. But know that in the odd chance this still may happen we are all first aid trained down at Roxxi's Poolroom. You'll be in safe hands upon your recovery, and you might even get a lolly too ;)

The next important thing on our checklist is valid identification and signing Roxxi's consent form. This is a legal requirement before any procedure. A consent form is required to be filled out before we start any service so we have your full consent and understanding of safety protocols of the procedure and proof of age. For the consent form to be valid we need ID. Whether that be a current drivers licence, photo ID card or any card with a photo of you (the client) showing proof of date of birth. In the odd case you have lost your photo ID a statutory declaration as a temporary ID is also acceptable.

For clients who are under the age of 16, a parent must be present with their own photo ID as well as a Medicare card with their child’s name on it so we can cross reference. For clients under the age of 16 years old you can only indulge in a basic piercing only, these include: ears, navel, nose and lip. For the more intense piercings such as surface, dermals and tongue piercings it's highly encouraged to wait until a person's body is more developed and you'll also be much more equipped to deal with the responsibility of the aftercare of intense piercings. Any intimate piercings will NOT be accepted regardless of parental consent until the client is 18+.

Once we get the formalities and boring paperwork done the fun really begins! At this point any questions about your piercing will be answered and it's now time to choose pretty jewellery that fits perfectly to your anatomy. Every piercing is anatomy based for safety reasons and smooth healing so yeah, I'll check your anatomy to make sure your piercing is going to heal well and not cause you any issues or infections. We'll make sure we decorate your body perfectly :) If there's a piercing you're really keen on that doesn’t fit quite right we can brainstorm ideas and I'll take care in suggesting something similar that will be better suited to you. Your safety and body is the most important part of any modification.

After we have chosen your piercing and jewellery I'll ask you to chill out, relax and ground yourself while I get all the sterilisation completed, set up, hands washed and gloves on. I'll clean the area on the body, mark it with a body pen and once we find the placement we’re both happy with I'll ask you to lay down and get comfortable. Before any piercing I'll ask you to breathe! This is so important, good breathing can prevent fainting and also send you into a zen state to take your mind off the very quick pain. Once the piercing is complete I will go through some tips on aftercare and answer any questions you may have.

Piercings can be scary and intimidating but my goal is to create an environment for newbies wanting to modify their bodies, seasoned veterans and the mob in between that just want a cheeky few bits of sparkle to brighten their bodies - Oh, and no question is a silly question.
